The process itself is fairly simple and accessible, even though it may seem slightly abstract and removed on first reading, especially when one has not been guided through a process like this before. Nevertheless, here’s a simplified version of what and how a typical session would look like for a client:
- Exchanging pleasantries followed by a simple check-in with the client to get a sense of what their previous few days have been like for them.
- Working with the client to identify the key theme, issue, or problem they wish to explore in an embodied fashion – this usually takes the shape of a distressing pattern that’s causing emotional upset for them.
- Guiding the client to access Present-Moment Awareness through a mix of grounding techniques, breath work, and co-regulation.
- Attuning to internal resources that help the client access positive and uplifting states like flow, openness, spaciousness, calm, roundedness, ease, stillness, pleasurable sensations, lightness, safety, support, etc.
- Inviting in a recent emotional trigger WITHIN the context of a well-resourced internal state – this could be through a simple explicit memory recall or be more nuanced, sophisticated, and precise by including affirmative-like statements and tying that up with highly-specific persons, places and situations.
- Processing the emotional or/and traumatic imprints connected to the trigger through an appropriate set of processing techniques suitable for each client – this typically involves actively discerning, tracking, and skilfully engaging with the different nervous system states, associated emotions, memories, and (limiting) beliefs that arise in this stage.
- Back to step 3, after a round of processing, and following this immediately with step 4, and weaving in step 2 where needed – repeat and rinse until close to session time.
- De-briefing, reflection, and integrating what transpired during the session, with direction and guidance provided on home work exercises that might be optimal and realistic for the client to do, until their next check-in.
